Kaselehlie- Similar to "Aloha" can be used as a greeting or salutation in Micronesia.
In this time of transition, "Kaselehlie" is especially appropriate because I am not only saying a temporary goodbye to the beautiful Portland, Oregon, I am also getting ready to say hello to an entirely new country, culture, language, and way of life.
I've tried to refrain from counting down the days until my departure, but now that I'm down to less than a week in the lovely City of Roses it's kind of hard to avoid. On June 6th I fly to Honolulu for 24 hours of "Staging" with the other 24 members of my training group. This is basically Peace Corps code for Pre-departure orientation. We'll go over what to expect, safety and security procedures, personal goals, and dive headfirst into your average ice-breaker/team-building exercises. Then we board an 11-hour flight which will take us to the island of Pohnpei, where our first 6 weeks of training are held.
In the meantime, I have 2 tasks to complete:
1- Say a temporary but bittersweet goodbye to my outstandingly supportive friends and family
2- Pack my life into 2 bags + a carry on
Which will prove to be more difficult? At this point it's a toss-up.
I don't know yet what internet access is going to look like once I'm there, but I'm going to try and stay on top of this blog to the best of my ability. Stay tuned for updates, photos, and stories from Micronesia/Palau.
Kaselehlie! (Truth be told, I have literally no clue how that's pronounced.)
